A Legacy That Lives On
By: Kayla Zuidersma
As the days came closer and closer to Amanda’s due date we kept in touch often. Knowing Amanda had two boys already and how different this pregnancy had been for her compared to her boys I wondered if it would be a girl. When I asked Amanda if she had any feelings about the gender she wasn’t sure and she explained that part of her didn’t want to get her hopes up.
A few years prior Amanda lost her mom. She was one incredible lady! She explained to me, ” She was the type of mom that you wanted to be close to. All of us kids were close with her because of it.” Amanda’s mom was a beautiful woman of God with an amazing heart and you can see a little sparkle of her left behind in each one of her kids. After a hard battle with cancer Amanda’s mom passed leaving behind her kids, husband and grandchildren.
Little did Amanda know that her mom’s legacy would continue to live on.
With both of her boys she delivered exactly 10 days early, only this time she went past that 10 day mark. I remember touching base with Amanda closer to her due date and talking about the gender of the baby and saying to her, ” Wouldn’t it be absolutely beautiful if you got to live on that mother daughter relationship you had with your mom but with your own daughter?” At the time Amanda gave me her sweet unsure laugh and said, “We shall see.”
And then the time came, the day Amanda would meet her sweet baby.
When I got Amanda’s call I was out the door in less than 10 minutes. You see, I had the privilege of attending Amanda’s last birth as well and it was quite the speedy delivery. So this time I was out the door light a bolt of lightning.
I met Amanda, her husband and her sister at the hospital just after 1 am and Amanda was 4cm and progressing well. She was well on her way to meeting her baby!
This mama had quite the support team! Each birth I attend is so different. Even from Amanda’s last birth things were so different. She had arrived early to the hospital this time to make sure she had enough time to get there. So what else do you do when it’s 3am and the coffee shop doesn’t open until 6am and you’re all too excited to sleep………you crack jokes, tell funny stories and help keep mom distracted as the time goes by. And boy were the jokes flying! I’m not sure if it was the fact that all of us were half asleep when we arrived or the excitement of it all……maybe a little of both!
So that’s just what we did…..laughed and joked the night away as Amanda continued to labour. Sometimes laughter really can be the best medicine! I loved being able to capture such a broad range of emotion during Amanda’s birth. With smiles and laughs this mama laboured through the wee hours of the morning letting her body lead her.
As Amanda’s contractions got stronger her husband stayed right by her side; supporting her, encouraging her, believing in her.
As Amanda continued to labour through the wee hours of the morning her husband and sister took turns supporting her and encouraging her. And through it all they continued to joke and laugh. Every once in a while her husband would crack a joke and through her contraction I’d hear Amanda giggle or make a snarky remark that would put us all into a historical laugh.
I watched as Amanda continued to follow the rhythms of her body. When she felt her body getting tired she decided to rest in between her contractions giving her body exactly what it needed. She was so close to meeting her baby now!
As the sun began to rise in the background Amanda’s body slowly began to transition.
She continued to listen to the rhythms of her body, doing exactly what her body needed to be able to birth her baby. With the support of her husband and sister, Amanda transitioned quickly and within minutes felt her body begin to push…
It was only moments after that Amanda was holding her beautiful baby! I remember her looking at her husband, “What is it?!!”
“It’s a girl!,” he said.
“What!? We have a girl?? Ohhh!! We have a girl!!!!!”
And in that moment it was all over, the pain, the waiting, the wondering. Her baby girl was here!
Together Amanda and Sean welcomed a beautiful baby girl named Madilyn Darlene, Darlene named after her mom.
Psalm 37: 4 “Take delight in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.”
Amanda shared this verse with me after her sweet baby girl was born. “Some part of me knew it was a girl but I did’t want to believe it. I knew God promised me a girl but I thought maybe that would be in the form of a daughter in law one day, not through blessing me with my own daughter.”
Those moments after birth to follow were pure bliss and so filled with emotion as Amanda and Sean snuggled their sweet baby girl. So surreal.
It wasn’t long after this sweet baby was born that Amanda’s brother came in, all smiles, so excited to meet his new niece. The love and support in this family continued to overflow within the hours after sweet Madilyn was born.
We all knew in those first moments that Amanda’s mom was looking down on her and her precious granddaughter.
Amanda, I hope this beautiful little girl of yours brings you so much joy and love. That she brightens your every day and changes your heart in ways you never thought possible.
Congratulations Sean & Amanda on the birth of your beautiful baby girl!
